Clutch Replacement – Exeter

At Foxhayes Garage, we carry out clutch replacements across a wide range of manual vehicles. It’s skilled, time-intensive work and we do it properly.

A clutch has a finite lifespan. How long it lasts depends on the vehicle, the driving style, and conditions, but when it starts to go, the signs are usually clear. Addressing it promptly avoids the risk of being stranded and if left too long, damage to the flywheel, which turns a straightforward replacement into a significantly more expensive job.

Signs your clutch may need replacing:

  • Slipping – the engine revs rise without a corresponding increase in speed
  • A high or spongy clutch biting point
  • Difficulty selecting gears, or gears crunching
  • A burning smell, particularly after hill starts or slow-moving traffic
  • Vibration or shuddering when pulling away
  • A clutch pedal that feels heavy, stiff, or unresponsive

What the job involves

Clutch replacement requires removing the gearbox to access the clutch assembly. We replace the clutch plate, pressure plate, and release bearing as a matter of course, and we’ll always inspect the flywheel and recommend resurfacing or replacement if it’s needed. Cutting corners at this stage only means doing the job again sooner.

Is your clutch giving you cause for concern? Book an inspection today – you can call us on 01392 258844, drop in, or use our online booking.

We are proud to be part of the Independent Garage Association, Bosch Car Service network, and we are an RAC Approved garage. We’re fully committed to maintaining and surpassing the high standards that are expected of us.
